Gair frowned at the noble, and Cavanwondered if Gair knew how much he looked like his father at that moment. “I am not giving Ostveld my crown,” he rumbled. “I am sharing my title with my spouse. The tides of change are coming to the ‘Velds, and we must ride themor be swept under.”

“You would run us aground on unknown shores?” Lord Twain asked. “And leave the Cheil to collect the flotsam.”

Gair shook his head. “The Cheil do not control the ‘Velds. Not yet. But if we appear to listen to them we have a better chance of—”

Lord Twain cut him off with a wordless shout. “Deceit and treachery!”he snapped. “Your father never would have stood for suchunderhanded tactics.” “I am not my father,” Gair said, stepping back. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “I do believe that the death of my father has unsettled you, Lord Twain,” he said. “Perhaps an extended stay at your estate willhelp youclear your head.”

“Your father would never—” Lord Twain started. Gair cut him off. “My father is no longer king,” he said, turning back to his desk and starting to shuffle papers.

Lord Twain stood there for a moment, clenching his fists. He glared one last time at Cavan, as though blaming him for everything, and then left the room swiftly, closing the door with more force than necessary.

Cavan sighed. “I suppose he represents the opinion of all the Lords of Estveld?” he asked, walking toward Gair.

“Not all of them, no,” Gair said with a sigh, “but most.”

Cavan reached out and rubbed a hand along his back. “Sit,” he said, pushing Gair toward his chair. Digging his thumbs into the muscles of Gair’s back, Cavandid his best to soothGair’s stress.

“He was one of Father’s most trusted advisors. I had hoped he would understand our need for peace, for the chance to rebuild.”

Cavan sighed. “He didn’t want to, and you cannot force vision on anyone who chooses not to see. We’ll find enough people interested in peace, you’ll see.”He rubbed Gair’s neck, looseningtight muscles.

“I don’t deserve you,” Gair moaned, folding his arms onhis desk and puttinghis head onthem.

“Nor I, you,” Cavan said, letting his hands move lower. “Yet here we are.” They were silent for a moment as Cavan continued his massage. “Did you mean what you said about me being King of Estveld withyou?”Cavanasked at last.

“Mm-hmm,” Gair said. He fell silent again for a moment, but then picked up his head enough to say, “I thought it was a foregone conclusion.” He sat up and Cavan dropped his hands to his sides, watching silently as Gair turned around. “Do you object?” Gair asked, reachingout to take Cavan’s hands inhis own.

Cavan shook his head. “It simply did not occur to me,” he said. “I had thought we would be separate, after.”

Gair stood up and put his arms around Cavan’s waist. “We’ve been handed the chance to unite the ‘Velds in a way that’s never been done,” he said. “I believe we can make a peace that lasts, even when there is no common enemy for us to fight.
